National Fisheries Institute (NFI)

The National Fisheries Institute (NFI) is “the leading trade association for the fish and seafood industry”. With little respect for the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), NFI “supports selectively reinstating intentional lethal taking of problem animals from robust marine mammal populations” to minimize “economic losses and lower property values”. While turtles are obviously not covered in the MMPA, TDI is left to wonder whether or not NFI recommends the same ecologically insensible approach to handling the interaction between commercial fishing and reptiles. Turtles are mentioned in regards to compensating property owners for “losing harvests because of turtle excluder devices, particularly when such property owners were not responsible for the species decline”. Unfortunately for sea turtles, shrimping boats are indiscriminate in their catch and all share an equal responsibility for species decline.
